Olympic medals, a Humboldt Research Award, Georgia History Book of the Year award and NSF CAREER Awards were among the many honors received by Franklin College students and faculty this summer. These include:
Faculty Kudos
- Stephen Berry has been named the inaugural holder of the Amanda and Greg Gregory Chair in the Civil War Era
- Gary Douberly and Tina Salguero, Assistant Professors of Chemistry, will each receive $750,000 for five years from the DOE's Office of Science Early Career Research Program for energy-related projects
- John Inscoe, Albert B. Saye Professor of History and University Professor, has been honored by the Georgia Historical Society, which named his book Writing The South Through The Self Georgia History Book of the Year
- Natarajan Kannan, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, received a nearly $1 million NSF CAREER Award to study the evolution of cellular signaling
- Bethany Moreton, Associate Professor of History and Women's studies, was one of 25 professors nationwide selected this year to join the speaker's bureau of the Organization of American Historians
- Andrew Paterson and Chung-Jui Tsai, who hold joint appointments in genetics and the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources and the College of Environmental and Agricultural Sciences, respectively, received $2 million in grants from U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Energy to speed biofuel development
- Gregory H. Robinson, Franklin Professor and Distinguished Research Professor of Chemistry, is one of a select group of international academics awarded a 2012 Humboldt Research Award
Student Kudos
- Spanish and International Affairs double major Cara Murray was featured in Amazing Students
- English major and biology, French minor Lian Peters was featured in Amazing Students
- Eight Franklin College students competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics. Psychology major Allison Schmitt earned a Gold Medal and broke the 200-meter Olympic freestyle record with a time of 1 minute, 53.61 seconds
- Mathematics minor Theresa Stratmann was featured in Amazing Students
- Simon Wildman, doctoral student in the Hugh Hodgson School of Music, was awarded second prize at the International Instrumental Competition in Markneukirchen, Germany
- Recent chemistry doctoral graduate Judy Wu won a 2012 International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Prize for Young Chemists
- History major Orry Young received the Army ROTC Warrior Forge Commander’s Leadership Award
