The 2022 African American Choral Ensemble (AACE) Spring Concert presentation features the music of African American Women Composers.
Such celebrated composers as Undine Smith Moore, Betty Jackson King, Lena McLin, Bernice Johnson Reagan, Ysaye M. Barnwell, Rosephanye Powell, Evelyn Simpson-Curenton, Evelyn LaRue Pittman, Nina B. Jackson, Josephine Poelinitz, Anita Watkins Stevens and Elbernita Clark, will be featured. The program was not initially conceived as part of the celebration of Womens History Month and yet it does fit the theme. The repertoire was chosen prior to invasion of Ukraine with no intentional reference to nor reflection on the conflict. As it turns out, each piece on the program deals with universal subjects that impact all of humanity. The composers and poets whose works are presented represent the beauty and compassion of each composer's heart for humanity. The universal language of music is used to address major issues with hopes of exposing more truth and shedding light on the human condition. Once hearts and minds are provoked to consider more of one's reality, the musical messages then offer expectations of hope, peace and joy.
