Data-driven Marine Conservation and Sustainability

As part of the cluster hire, the Department of Marine Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant Professor in Marine Conservation and Sustainability, who applies artificial intelligence to focus on the science of protecting, recovering and sustainably using coastal and marine resources. Possible research areas include (but are not limited to) fisheries management, marine protected areas, marine biodiversity, ocean health, and coastal adaptation strategies. The candidate's research program should involve collection and analysis of large data sets, such as those from sensor networks and automated samplers.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent in Marine Sciences (or a related area) and at least one year of postdoctoral experience. We are particularly interested in candidates who integrate field and computational work and can complement our existing expertise in marine, estuarine and coastal systems. The successful candidate will have a record that provides evidence of scholarship, synergistic activities, and the potential to maintain an active, externally funded research program. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to our new and growing Ocean Science B.S. program and to the Marine Sciences graduate programs by supporting research and mentoring of students and postdocs, and by teaching courses in areas such as Marine Biology, Marine Policy, and Data Science, as well as advanced courses in their area of specialization.

The Dept. of Marine Sciences has faculty located on both the UGA main campus in Athens, where this position will be located, and at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography in Savannah, GA. In addition to the Environmental AI cluster, there are opportunities to directly interact with faculty in the Odum School of Ecology, the Center for Integrative Conservation Research, the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources, and the School of Engineering, as well as multiple departments in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, and to take advantage of resources at both Skidaway Institute and the UGA Marine Institute on Sapelo Island.

Applications received by December 31, 2022, are assured full consideration; however, applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Applicants will be asked to provide names and contact information for 3 references using the online system. Applications should include:

  1. cover letter addressing the candidate's background relative to the responsibilities of the position
  2. curriculum vitae
  3. a statement of teaching philosophy and a statement of research philosophy that highlights their interest in data science and artificial intelligence, and their contributions to understanding marine conservation and sustainability
  4. statement on commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  5. 3 representative publications
