First-Book Subvention Program

Assistant professors in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences may apply on a competitive basis for book subvention grants in amounts up to $2,500.  This program will support assistant professors seeking to publish their work with academically respected presses whose prestige will benefit both the assistant professor and the University.  Funded proposals must meet the following criteria:

  • The book must be complete and must be formally, unconditionally accepted for publication by a scholarly press of national or international stature that is well regarded in the candidate’s field.
  • The press that accepts the book must externally referee the manuscript.
  • The book must be a single-author manuscript (either a scholarly monograph or collection of essays by the author).
  • At the time of funding the author must be an assistant professor in the Franklin College who intends to seek promotion and tenure at UGA.

To apply for subvention funds, the faculty member must submit a single bookmarked PDF of the following materials to April Brown:

  • 1-page summary of the project and the funds requested.
  • Completed manuscript.
  • Formal acceptance from the publisher.
  • Readers’ reports.
  • Statement of expenses from publisher requesting subvention.
  • Vita.

A committee of full professors chaired by an associate dean in the Franklin College will review proposals.  The committee will consider the quality of both the press and the project.  Priority will go to proposals from faculty for whom publication of a book is a departmental criterion for promotion and tenure.

Availability of funds may be limited; therefore, faculty should submit their proposals as soon as they are aware of the book’s acceptance and the need for a subvention. All available funds for the 2024 fiscal year have been allocated; the College will consider requests for the next fiscal year starting in July 2024.
