Athens Pulmonary physician Drew McKown (BS '07) has spent the COVID-19 pandemic on the front lines at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical, with 12-hour days of patient care and research to stay abreast of the latest developments and treatments. Vital service to his community is a story began at the University of Georgia and informs his selection to the 2022 40 Under 40:
Professional Experience
- Received his medical doctorate from Harvard Medical School in 2011.
- Completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was a resident leader on the Quality and Safety team.
- Finished his pulmonary and critical care fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2018 while simultaneously earning a Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation, performing original clinical research on mechanical ventilation and adult respiratory distress syndrome.
Community Involvement
- Leadership in the local hospitals and advocacy around COVID-19 preparedness and response.
- Proud parent and supporter of Barrow Elementary school in Athens, Georgia.
- Mentored and served as a shadowing opportunity for UGA students interested in pursing careers in medicine.
