Cobb County Chief Magistrate Judge Brendan Murphy, Double A.B. Dawg and Franklin Residential College resident, used his UGA experience to begin a legal career and move through the Solicitor General and Attorney General offices, a public service career already well worthy of of the 2022 class of the 40 Under 40.
Professional Experience
- Started legal career at a Marietta law firm that counseled school districts—including Cobb County and Marietta City Schools—on a wide variety of legal matters.
- Left a career in private practice to serve the people of Cobb County as a prosecutor, first working as an assistant solicitor general in the Solicitor General’s Office. Served as lead prosecutor for the Domestic Violence Court.
- Subsequently moved to the Cobb County District Attorney’s Office, serving as an Assistant District Attorney (ADA) and later as a Senior ADA in the Trial Division. A strong supporter of the Accountability Court and internship/apprentice programs.
- Appointed as Chief Magistrate in 2019 before being elected in 2020.
Community Involvement
- Appointed to the Board of Commissioners of the Georgia Magistrates Retirement Fund, serving as vice-chair.
- Serves as the chair of the legislative committee of the statewide Council of Magistrate Court Judges and as a member of the statewide Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice’s Judicial COVID-19 Task Force.
- Member of Leadership Cobb class of 2022, a community leadership program run by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce.
- Serves on the boards of the Cobb County Law Library, Cobb County Child Abuse Protocol Committee, Alternative Dispute Resolution Office, and the Cobb Justice Foundation.
- Member of the Cobb County Bar Association; previously served on the board of trustees
