The UGA Symphony Orchestra will be performing an extraordinary concert tonight, Tuesday, April 2nd, at 7:30 p.m. in Hugh Hodgson Concert Hall. Directed by Mark Cedel, the orchestra will be performing pieces by Robert Schumann, George Walker, and Richard Strauss. Guest faculty artist Josh Bynum will be featured on Walker's "Concerto for Trombone and Strings."
The UGASO will also be performing the world premiere of a piece entitled "Synapse" written by student composer Sydney Doemel. "Synapse" is the culmination of the inaugural Large Ensemble in Residence Program at the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. Composition students submitted proposals and score samples during the fall semester. Scores were evaluated by a panel of HHSOM faculty members. The winning composer works closely with the orchestra, wind ensemble, or chorus and its conductors in refining the work through reading sessions with the ensemble and meetings with the conductors.
